ISO/IEC 42001
Definition
ISO/IEC 42001 is the international standard for AI management systems (AIMS), published in 2023. It requires organizations to systematically govern the risks of their AI systems - with defined responsibilities, lifecycle controls and evidencable processes. Certifiable like ISO 27001, and increasingly part of B2B requirements.
For agent operators ISO 42001 provides the frame in which human-in-the-loop and audit trails belong: the standard asks for evidencable controls - who may approve what, how decisions are documented, how effectiveness is reviewed. A tamper-evident approval record is exactly the kind of evidence an audit wants to see.
